Lake Tahoe travel should be on everyone's life list. It is the largest alpine lake in North America. At an elevation of 4,580 feet (about 9/10 of a mile) and a surface area of 191 square miles, there is a lot of lake to see. It is also the second deepest lake in the US with an average depth of 1,000 feet and a deepest point of 1,645, meaning the sides of the lake are very steep and plunge rapidly to great depths.
The waters of Lake Tahoe are known for their clarity, and despite the depth, items and features on the bottom can be seen with clarity. There are several ship wrecks on the bottom of the lake that are diveable, including the famous steam ship SS Tahoe. Several companies offer dive support services.
Lake Tahoe straddles the border between California and Nevada, right at the 'bend point' along Nevada's western border. There are grand casinos on the Nevada side at both the north shore and the south shore.
Lake tahoe is also a truly year round vacation destination, with many activities for all seasons. It has several resorts that offer panoramic views of the majestic lake and breathtaking mountains. It is famous for its clear waters and the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains on all sides, and the area and the waters when seen in the light of a full moon is one of the most striking views one can have. Lake Tahoe is an absolutely beautiful place to spend a week or so.
LAKE TAHOE SUMMER - Lake tahoe is a superb summer destination, but be sure to be aware of your exposure to the sun as it is very easy to get sunburned at this altitude. Summertime Tahoe has excellent activities and events throughout the summer months. During July and August, people come from all over the world for the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival (call 1-800-74-SHOWS for tickets and info) and while there enjoy wine tastings from the nearby Robert Mondavi Napa Valley vinyards.
Take advantage of the warm weather and clear water with a glass-bottom boat ride. Once over deep water, it takes on a striking blue much like the full Pacific. Or you can see it from the air in a piloted glider.
With its higher elevations, cooler temperatures and clean air, Lake Tahoe is a great way for city-dwelling Calilfornians to escape the heat and smog. This means that it can sometimes get crowded, especially on holiday weekends.

LAKE TAHOE WINTER -Lake tahoe is a destination which could completely change your thinking about winter vacations. There are ski areas, but you can also enjoy ice fishing, sleigh rides, ice skating and snow mobiling.
The ski areas draws people from all over the world for great downhill runs and snow conditions. Places like Alpine Meadows, Homewood, Squaw Valley, Soda Springs and Donner Ski Ranch are among at least 14 major locations and a few lesser known minor ones.
Winter starts with the Tahoe International film Festival in November. Lasting five days, it draws the Hollywood scene to the newest breaking independent film makers. Winter ends with the annual SnowFest in North Lake Tahoe in March for ten fun-filled days
